Family Tradition

2007 Haberman Family

Carl George Haberman was born in his parents’ home near the small southwestern Minnesota community of Kinbrae in 1878, to Ferdinand and Maria Haberman.  They had immigrated to this country from Austria.  Carl, the fourth of eight children, lived with his parents until 1905.  In the Spring of that year, at the age of 27, he loaded four horses, a gang-plow and wagon on an immigrant train headed for Barney, North Dakota, a year earlier Carl had purchased a quarter-section of land two miles North of Barney.  Carl worked long hours that first year clearing his land and building a small shack, the only building on the farmstead, was used as his house and also was wintering quarters for his horses.  In the spring of 1907, Carl built his second house and in October of 1907 he married Ida Viet, the daughter of Frank and Caroline Viet.  Carl and Ida were to raise eight children; Adelaide, Julius, Adolph, Lawrence, Carl Jr., James, Mary Ann and Emeric.  Of those eight children two attended NDSSS, Carl Jr. and Adelaide.  From here the tradition began.

Adelaide Haberman (1928 Liberal Arts) married Edd Goerger and farmed southwest of Barney, they raised seven children; David, Phyllis, Allan, Monica, John, Pam and Idette.  David married Virginia Vaplon (2005 Liberal Arts), Phyllis married Richard (Dick) Klosterman;  one of their five children Tom (1980 Ag Business) married Rachael Wickoren (1982 Business Management) of their three children, Carson is a (2004 Ag Business) alumnus.

Julius  Haberman married Adelaide Fink and they also farmed southwest of Barney and raised five children; Shirley, James, Donald, Janelle and John.  After the death of Adelaide, Julius married Ann Kubela.  Shriley Haberman (1960 Accounting) married Dennis Lee, Janelle Haberman (1969 Stenography) married Brian Meslow (1976 Auto Mechanic).

Adolph Haberman married Bridget Moulsolff and they farmed west of Barney, and had no children.

Lawrence Haberman married Regina Puetz and farmed north of Barney, they raised seven children; Ron, Curtis, Dick, Paulette, Carl, Steve and Idette.  Dick (1966 Electronics) married Linda Woodbury (1967 Stenography) of their three children, Laura is a (1999 Business Management).  Paulette Haberman (1967 Business/Liberal Arts) married Dennis Naggy.  Carl Haberman(1969 Pre-Engineering) married Patty Hilgers (attended in 1968-1969)Steve Haberman (attended 1976 Auto Mechanics) married Sheila Heitkamp (attended in 1977).  Idette Haberman Jones married Doug Jones, two of their three children attended NDSCS, Melissa Jones Pederson (1994 Business) and Sarah Jones Reiland (1995 Occupational Therapy) who married Cody Reiland (attended for pre-engineering).

Carl Haberman Jr. (1938 Automotive) married Evelyn Mauch, he was rural mail carrier and lived north of Barney, where they raised their seven children, Doug, Dean, Doris, Paul, Yvonne, Karen and Roger, of the seven children six attended NDSSS/NDSCS.   Doug (1966 Pre-Med) married Mary Ellen Dotzenrod (1966 Business Administration)Dean (1974 Plumbing) married Bev Marcil, Doris Haberman Quam (1969 Nursing) married Robert Quam (1966 Sheet Metal) their son Jason is married to Melissa Goerdt (1999 Liberal Arts).  Paul (1974 Refrigeration/Air Conditioning) married Barb Blazek ( 1974 Medical Secretary).  Yvonne Haberman Schmit (1975 Nursing) married Tony Schmit (attended 1974-75), Karen Haberman Hoffert married Mark Hoffert (1979 Liberal) and their son Dan Hoffert (will be a 2008 Culinary Arts Alumnus).  Roger (1982 Civil Engineering) married Mary Sikorski (1983 Office).

James Haberman married Madelyn Moulsoff and they farmed east of Barney and raised eleven children; Susan, Jane, Patty, James Jr., Mary, Jeff, Kristie, David, Linda, Bob and Bill, of the eleven children nine attended NDSSS/NDSCS.  Susan Haberman Poppen married Dennis Poppen (1967 Liberal Arts).  Jane Haberman Gilleland ( 1970 Dental Hygiene) married Charles Gilleland ( 1970 Architectural Drafting).  Patty Haberman Boyer (1971 Dental Hygiene) married Stuart Boyer (1971 Electrical Technology) and one of their three children Mandy is a (2000 Micro Computer Specialist) Alumnus.  James (1973 Pre-Dental) married Joy Kjar (1972 Nursing).  Mary Haberman Erbes (1973 Nursing) married Dale Erbes (1971 Business) two of their four children and two in-laws attended NDSCS, Alyson Erbes Crier (1997 Occupational Therapy Assistant) married Shane Crier (1997 Electrical Technology), Alyson also taught from 2003-2005 in OTA, Jeff Erbes married Kirsten Lienen (2003 Administrative Assistant) and Joe (2002 Electronics).  Jeff Haberman (1975 Electronics) married Vicky Ford.  Kristie Haberman Boyer (1977 Secretarial) married Mark Boyer (1977 Business Management).

Linda Haberman Schnepf (1980 Legal Secretary) married Kevin Schnepf.  Bob Haberman (1981 Electronics) married Nya Grewe.  Bill Haberman (1981 Diesel Mechanic) married Dee Dee Kjar (1981 Nursing).

Mary Ann Haberman Klosterman married Dr. Harold Klosterman (1943 Pre-Engineering), they in Fargo and raised seven children; Larry, Julie, Mary Jo, Michael, Lisa, Janet and Amy.  Harold was a professor and chairman of the Bio Chemistry Department at NDSU. 

Emeric Haberman married Madonna (Knot) Adams Haberman; they farmed North of Barney and raised six children on the original farmstead of Carl and Ida.  All six of their children attended NDSSS/NDSCS.  Darius Adams (1975 Electronics) married Jane Rezner, Colleen Adams (1989 Para Legal)Michele Adams (1985 Graphic Arts) married Travis Tuistra.  Cindy Haberman Ingelin (1985 Graphic Arts)Curt Haberman (1986 Auto Tech), who now works at NDSCS in the Physical Plant and Eric Haberman(1989 Auto Technology).

Over a 62 members of the Carl and Ida family have graduated from NDSSS/NDSCS over the last 80 years, starting with Adelaide in 1928 to Dan Hoffert in 2008.  Congratulations to the Haberman family on continuing the family tradition at NDSCS!
