Madeline Miller

Madeline Larson Miller attended NDSSS from 1946 to 1948.   She was enrolled in the Junior College and majored in business.  Near the end of her second year she took the Federal Civil Service test and was then employed at the Farmers Home Administration in Wahpeton.  Madeline was married in 1950 to Darrell Miller; they farmed near Wahpeton and raised four children, Faye, Blake, Gayle & Perry.  Madeline is now retired and lives in Wahpeton.  She is involved as a volunteer for the St. Francis Hospital, Bagg Bonanza Farm, Bethel Church and keeps busy with her grandchildren.

Madeline said “Our family has a long affiliation with NDSCS.  My husband’s grandmother attended this school in the late 1800’s, which was then known as the Red River Valley University, my brother and I both attended and two of my four children also went to the college which was then known as NDSSS.”  Many of Madeline’s in-laws attended, as well as all of her nieces and most of her nephews.

She shared, “when my daughter decided to become a chiropractor, she needed a credit in Chemistry.  She took Chemistry for 1 year here at NDSCS. While she was in Chiropractic College her professor asked her where she received her degree in Chemistry and Gayle informed him that she had taken only one year of Chemistry in her local Junior College, with Don Fulp, as her teacher.  The professor’s comment was, “that must have been some college!”

Madeline is proud of the fact that her son, Perry Miller and her sister-in-law, Jeanette Miller both serve on the Alumni/Foundation board.  When Madeline attended NDSSS, she worked part-time in the Registrar’s office for Wally Nordgaard. Madeline believes the tradition of attending NDSCS will be passed down to her grandchildren.  She stated, “I don’t think that some of my grandchildren will have a choice as to where they will first attend college, NDSCS is a MUST!
